Folding Method

The Pouch type has the advantage of being more flexible than prismatic or cylindrical in terms of the size and structure of the cell and increasing the energy capacity per cell. However, due to the complicated process and difficulty in optimizing quality conditions, the quality of the facility must be excellent, and it is difficult to mass-produce if the level of process understanding of production personnel is not high. In some cases, technology analysis and comparison according to the battery structure are compared to customers. However, it is true that it is not fully understood until you experience actual production. Today, I will explain the folding method.


Currently, stacking types have become the trend, so it seems that folding type is not used much. There are two reasons expected. First, it is difficult to implement the construction method compared to stacking. Second, folding cannot dramatically increase the number of stacks compared to stacking. Nevertheless, the reason why I want to explain folding is that the unit production speed is faster than stacking, which is advantageous for mass production, and the foot print is small, so it takes up less space. So, the initial pouch type production was used as a trend. From the structural point of view of folding, some may think of the winding used in the early prismatic cell. However, there is a lot of difference from that. It's the same when it comes to supplying separators, but the way supplying electrodes is completely different. And the process of pressurization and lamination is essential to attach the electrode well to the separator.Due to the difference, only a few facility manufacturers can implement this method. Please understand that this construction method is difficult to explain further from the perspective of technology protection with several manufacturers.
